The Wrangell and Sitka Scholarship Funds were established in 2011 to honor the memory of Tadao Sasayama, Founder of the Alaska Pulp Corporation.
Since 1954, the Alaska Pulp Corporation has been a part of the Wrangell and Sitka communities. Mr. Sasayama was the founder and the First Chairman of Alaska Pulp Corporation. He was a frequent visitor to Wrangell and displayed a keen interest in Alaska and its people. He retired in 1971 and passed away three years later at the age of 78.
Scholarships are $20,000 total ($5,000 per year, renewable for four years) and are dependent upon students maintaining good standing and a full course load as prescribed by the post-secondary school.
Eligibility
Scholarships are available to Wrangell and Sitka High School seniors who plan to pursue post-secondary education. Selection will be based on outstanding academic achievement and or special talent. There will be three scholarships awarded per year from each school.

The Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage scholarship encourages scholastic performance,
cross-country skiing, and participation in community ski activities. The awards provides provides $1,500 toward educational expenses at a college or university to Alaska residents who are high school seniors or currently enrolled as college students.
Applicants must be members of the high school cross-country ski team during their junior and senior years and must have individual or family memberships in the NSAA.

The Neal O. Thorpe Memorial Scholarship supports Alaskan students who
are the first in their immediate family to attend post-secondary
school. Dr. Thorpe was a Trustee and Executive Director of the Murdock
Charitable Trust and had deep ties to Alaska through his work to improve
the quality of life for Alaskans. A humble and quiet man, Dr. Thorpe's
hearty and infectious laugh could nonetheless often be heard and enjoyed
from far away. Understated but wise, he always thought carefully and
thoroughly before speaking. His dry sense of humor and keen wit
displayed the apparent spontaneity that only careful thought can
produce.
The Neal Thorpe Memorial Scholarship awards
successful applicants $7,500 per year for up to five years. Qualified
applicants must be an Alaska resident, be a graduate of a high school or
equivalent program located in Alaska, must be the first in their
immediate family to pursue a post-secondary degree and must be enrolled
in one of the eligible universities listed below.
The deadline for this scholarship has passed. Recipients will be notified in mid-August.
Shelly was born in Minneapolis on Feb. 4, 1967, and lived in Juneau, Anchorage, McGrath and Fairbanks for most of her 41 years. She was a wildlife biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game in Fairbanks. A true Alaskan adventuress, she loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and especially flying.
The Shelly Szepanski Memorial Flight Training Scholarship will provide an award of up to $5,000 to help qualified applicants earn their private or commercial/instrument ratings, including a float rating.

The David E. Knox Memorial Nursing Fellowship supports outstanding candidates in the pursuit of registered nursing degrees and service to small Alaskan communities.
Successful applicants will embody the same nurturing compassion, detailed organization, high technical standards and devotion to health care for which David was known.

The Frank and Carol Pinkerton Orchestral String Instrument Scholarship is for high school students who display talent, dedication to music and a serious commitment to an advanced music education study program in a recognized music school, college, or university. The Red Boucher Scholarship honors the late H.A. "Red" Boucher. It supports outstanding Alaskans pursuing careers in technology education and/or training.
Red Boucher is recognized at the state and national level as one of the pioneers of the Information Age and as an authority on the subject of computer-mediated communication. He had a long and distinguished career in public service, including holding the elected offices of lieutenant governor and state representative.
The Red Boucher Scholarship will provide an award of $1,000. Applications are due January 15, 2012. Download a

Young athletes from 7 to 19 from the Central Kenai Peninsula participate in a variety of sports and cultural activities. This scholarship provides a maximum of $200 per 24-month period to individuals with limited resources in need of financial assistance.

Pauline Reiter created this scholarship to honor the memory of her brother, Harry H. Hirshik. The scholarship benefits auto mechanic students because of Mr. Hirshik's love for cars and their mechanics. Applications are due in the fall.
Mr. Hirshik came to Alaska in 1965 and built a cabin in Eagle River. He worked at Fort Richardson as a light maintenance equipment mechanic until his retirement.

The City of Hoonah created a scholarship years ago to demonstrate its commitment to arts education. Young people in the community compete annually for a full or partial scholarship to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Applications are due in the spring for that summer's camp.
The overriding criterion is the ability of the applicant to benefit from the Fine Arts Camp experience. Applicants must be residents of the City of Hoonah, of the proper age to attend camp, and have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0. Worthiness for the scholarship is judged primarily on the basis of scholarship, reliability, and character. Financial need is a secondary consideration.

The Olson Scholarship is given to a senior at Anchorage's West High School based on high academic success potential, leadership qualities and evidence of financial need.

Provides scholarships for graduating seniors Dimond High School. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in dancing, acting, modeling or veterinary medicine. Candidates are expected to have a 2.0 or higher GPA and show the same sociability and love for life Melissa did.
In loving memory of Melissa, her family started an annual memorial scholarship to help students from Dimond High further their education. She was dedicated to Alaska Dance Theatre, loved animals, thought school was a social time, had a great smile and was good at math. This scholarship will reward applicants who share her many good qualities, enriching every student who receives a scholarship from the Melissa Faye Pike Foundation Fund.
