Competitive Grants

Competitive grants are those for which nonprofit organizations compete based on pre-set requirements. Funds available for competitive grants may come from a number of types of funds and are announced on this web page and through various other mediums.
Criteria and eligibility will also vary depending upon the grant cycle open at the time you apply. We offer two primary grant cycles: for our unrestricted funds (Alaska Fund and Elmer & Ruth Schwantes Fund), and also for the Pebble Fund. Each of our affiliate communities also have their own competitive grant cycles.
Since our beginnings in 1996, generous Alaskans have contributed money unspecified for a particular use, except to better the communities the Foundation serves. With income from those endowments, we identify both the best of Alaska that needs preserving, and the challenges we must meet to make our community better. In 2008, we awarded more than $6 million in grants through the Alaska Fund and the Elmer & Ruth Schwantes Fund. Grants are awarded annually, based on an application and subsequent review by the Grants Committee.
The Pebble Fund
The Pebble Fund seeks applications for activities that support its mission to “promote and enhance sustainable and healthy communities and renewable resources within the Bristol Bay region,” from qualified tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations including schools, churches, and programs of government agencies. Applications are accepted in the areas of renewable resources/fish, energy, education and community and economic development.
Applications are now being accepted for the spring 2010 grant cycle. Applications must be submitted
online using the Foundation's online grant system. New users will need to create an account before proceeding.
Applications are due by 5 PM on February 26, 2010.
Join ACF for two Web meetings to discuss the application process on December 16 or February 3, both from 10-11 AM. To register and receive call-in information, please contact Julie Frizzell (907/334-6700 or

Seward Community Foundation
The Seward Community Foundation is accepting grant applications through March 1, 2010 from qualified tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) organizations and organizations performing 501(c)(3) type projects. The amount and number of grant awards is dependent on the applications received.
All applications will be evaluated based on merit of the project, ability and past reputation of the organization, clarity and measurable goals, and whether costs are commensurate with benefits. Preference will be given to projects which are collaborative or cooperative in nature.
Ineligible organizations or activities include: individuals, non-Alaska based organizations and federal government agencies. We also will not consider applications for religious activities, endowment building, fundraising, lobbying, or any proposals which discriminate as to race, gender, age, disability, etc.
Award decisions, made by the SCF board of directors, will be made by April 12.

Safety Net Fund
The Safety Net Fund makes grants to qualifying nonprofit organizations that are helping Alaskans meet their most basic needs for food, shelter, utility assistance, emergency cash and/or prescription medications. We know that across Alaska, social service providers are straining to meet the needs of a growing clientele and the Safety Net Fund strives to alleviate this need. Grants from this fund are contingent on incoming donations.
